Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has issued a road safety alert as thousands of Kenyans take to the roads ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays.
In his festive message, Chirchir urged motorists, passengers, and public transport operators to exercise caution, noting that the holiday season often records increased road traffic and a higher risk of accidents.
He advised passengers to board only compliant public service vehicles (PSVs) and avoid drivers who flout traffic rules.
The CS also called on drivers and transport operators to ensure vehicles are roadworthy and to prioritise the safety of all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.
He warned that speeding, reckless driving, and driver fatigue remain major causes of crashes during the festive period.
Chirchir emphasised the role of law enforcement and regulatory agencies, urging members of the public to report dangerous driving and other safety concerns to the National Police Service and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
He said timely reporting can help prevent accidents and save lives.
The government has stepped up road safety campaigns and enforcement as travel volumes rise across major highways and urban centres.
Chirchir concluded by wishing Kenyans a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, calling on all road users to act responsibly and ensure they arrive at their destinations safely.
