Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s health became the focus of public attention after he missed a major cultural event in Baringo on Monday, prompting official explanations and widespread online speculation.
Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku confirmed that Kindiki was unwell and unable to attend the Baringo Cultural Festival and Kimalel Goat Auction, saying he was sent as the Deputy President’s representative.
Ruku conveyed Kindiki’s greetings to residents and emphasised the Deputy President’s continued support for the event, including financial contributions despite his absence.
Later on Monday night, Kindiki took to X to address the circulating rumours, posting a brief message to reassure the public: “I am well, very well.”
The message appeared aimed at downplaying speculation that his absence was due to serious illness.
Kindiki’s absence initially generated questions on social media and among some media outlets, with commentators suggesting broader reasons beyond simple illness.
However, with his personal message, there is no official indication of any serious medical condition, and the Deputy President’s office maintains that he remains active in his duties.
The government’s position, as articulated by CS Ruku and reinforced by Kindiki’s own message, is that the Deputy President remains active, healthy, and in contact with his office, and that his absence from the Baringo event was temporary and not indicative of a serious health issue.
This episode comes amid heightened public interest in the visibility and performance of Kenya’s executive leadership ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
Kindiki’s prompt reassurance via social media appears to have stemmed rumours and provided clarity on his condition.
