Activist Maria Sarungi Warns World Leaders Against Endorsing Tanzania Election Results

Tanzanian activist Maria Sarungi has issued a strong warning to global leaders not to recognize the results of Tanzania’s recent presidential election, claiming the vote was marred by massive irregularities and violence.

The National Electoral Commission announced President Samia Suluhu Hassan as the winner with 31 million votes, representing 97.66 percent of the total.

Her closest challenger, Chaumu, received 213,414 votes, while the number of registered voters stood at 37 million.

Reacting to the announcement on X, Sarungi described the election as a coronation, not a contest.

She accused authorities of orchestrating a plan to ensure President Samia’s victory by silencing opposition parties and jailing key figures.

“When Chadema was banned and Tundu Lissu jailed, she was prepared to be coronated,” she stated.

The outspoken activist also questioned the credibility of the turnout figures, saying the country had been under tight security lockdown since Election Day.

“Over 1,000 killed – how did 31 million Tanzanians go to vote?” she wrote, accusing the government of concealing a humanitarian crisis.

In past elections, government officials have maintained that Tanzania’s voting process meets international standards and reflects the will of the people.

Sarungi’s warning has put foreign governments in a delicate position.

“Any head of state that will recognize this result is an accomplice to the massacre and rigging,” she declared, urging the international community to stand with Tanzanians demanding accountability and justice.
