Chilufya Tayali, president of Zambia’s Economic and Equity Party, has paid tribute to former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga, calling him a political icon and patriot.
Tayali said Odinga’s contributions to Kenya’s democracy and governance were immense even though Odinga never achieved the presidency. He offered his condolences to Odinga’s family and all Kenyans.
Tayali reflected on Odinga’s electoral battles, noting the 2007, 2013, and 2017 presidential campaigns.
He said Odinga “forced incumbents to sweat” and taught many how to be an effective opposition.
Tayali emphasized Odinga’s political school - how leaders holding power had to remain accountable.
Beyond the opposition role, Tayali described Odinga as patriotic.
He pointed out that when national unity was needed, Odinga negotiated — putting Kenya’s interest above political rivalry. Regarding Odinga’s bid to be African Union Chair, Tayali said many “recognized” him for his stature even though he did not win.
Here are key words from Tayali: “He is a political hero, he contributed massively to Kenya’s politics, governance and democracy, and this Mzee taught me something and I salute him.”
He also prayed: “May God receive him in His Eternal Peace.”
Kenyan political leaders and citizens have also begun sharing their reactions. Across social media and in formal tributes, many are recalling Odinga’s perseverance in the face of repeated electoral defeats and his negotiation efforts.
Tayali’s remarks highlight larger themes in East African politics: how opposition figures shape democracy, the value of persistence, and the role of negotiation in maintaining national cohesion.
