H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, today expressed profound grief over the death of Raila Amolo Odinga, former Prime Minister of Kenya.
In a formal statement, Youssouf described Odinga as a towering statesman whose legacy transcends national boundaries.
Representing the AU and its institutions, Youssouf extended heartfelt condolences to the Odinga family, the Kenyan government, and the people of Africa. He called Odinga’s passing an immense loss to Kenya and the continent.
“Raila Odinga was a steadfast champion of democracy, good governance, and people-centered development,” the AU Chairperson said. “His decades-long dedication to justice and pluralism left an indelible mark on Kenya and beyond. He inspired generations through his courage, resilience, and belief in democratic institutions.”
Youssouf also emphasized Odinga’s work as African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development, noting that he played a key role in promoting Africa’s integration and connectivity agenda.
He credited Odinga with supporting the foundations of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and broad socioeconomic transformation.
“Africa has lost one of its most visionary sons; a leader who dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice, democracy, and unity. His legacy will continue to inspire our collective efforts toward a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic Africa," Youssouf added.
The African Union joins Kenyans and Africans across the continent in honoring Odinga’s life and contributions.
His career in public service, marked by persistent advocacy for reform, remains a potent symbol of the ongoing struggle for democratic governance in Africa.
