Pope Leo XIV Calls for Immediate Gaza Ceasefire, Lauds Progress in Peace Talks

Pope Leo XIV has voiced deep concern over the ongoing suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, urging world leaders to intensify efforts to end the war and free all hostages.

In a message shared on X, the Pope said he remains saddened by the immense suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza, while noting that recent peace negotiations have shown significant steps forward toward ending the conflict in the Middle East.

His appeal comes as fresh diplomatic efforts raise hopes for a possible breakthrough.

The Pope called on those “in positions of responsibility” to pursue peace with sincerity and urgency, saying a ceasefire is vital to stop the bloodshed and ease the humanitarian crisis.

“I ask all those in positions of responsibility to commit themselves to this path, to bring about a ceasefire and to release the hostages,” he said, urging the global community to “pray together so that the ongoing efforts may put an end to the war and lead us towards a just and lasting peace.”

The Vatican has consistently pushed for peace and humanitarian aid since the fighting intensified, with Pope Leo XIV repeatedly condemning civilian deaths and calling for the protection of children and medical workers.

His latest statement reaffirms the Church’s call for dialogue and reconciliation, highlighting the moral duty of leaders to prioritize human life over political and military goals.

The Pope’s message adds to growing international pressure for a negotiated truce as conditions in Gaza worsen.
