Lawyer Nelson Havi has thrown his weight behind former Chief Justice David Maraga, describing him as the kind of leader Kenya requires to restore integrity and fight corruption ahead of the 2027 general election.
During an interview on Citizen TV on Monday, Havi said Maraga’s leadership record and moral uprightness make him the most qualified person to challenge President William Ruto.
He noted that Maraga’s firmness during his tenure as Chief Justice proved that he could stand up for justice and the rule of law even under immense political pressure.
“There is no other potential candidate that has been formidable in the past about issues that affect Kenyans apart from David Maraga. If we want any change in the country, we must elect Maraga because we need people who can deal with corruption and have integrity," Havi said.
Havi emphasized that Kenya’s leadership problem is rooted in a lack of ethical leaders willing to prioritize national interests over personal gain.
He cited Maraga’s decision to nullify the 2017 presidential election as one of the boldest acts of accountability in Kenya’s democratic history.
Although Maraga has not expressed any political ambitions since retiring in 2021, Havi’s remarks have reignited debate about whether credible professionals should step forward to rescue Kenya’s political system from deep-seated corruption.
Some political observers see such calls as a growing public demand for leaders with proven integrity rather than political loyalty.
The discussion around Maraga’s potential role in politics comes as the opposition continues to search for a unifying figure ahead of 2027.
With the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition consolidating its base, attention is shifting toward new faces that could offer Kenyans a credible alternative.
Havi’s endorsement, while personal, adds to a wider conversation about Kenya’s future leadership and the qualities citizens should look for in their next president.
