Cherargei Urges Kenyans to Respect Neighboring Elections Following UN Human Rights Concerns

Nandi Senator Kiprotich Cherargei has urged Kenyans to steer clear of political involvement in neighboring countries as Tanzania and Uganda prepare for upcoming general elections.

His comments follow a Daily Nation report detailing the United Nations’ concerns over abductions and human rights violations in Kenya.

The UN, through Special Rapporteur Mary Lawlor, raised alarms over police killings, enforced disappearances, and detention of government critics after the 2024 protests and events earlier this year.

Kenya’s apparent lack of response to two UN letters has placed the country at risk of referral to the Human Rights Council.

Cherargei addressed the issue on X, warning citizens—particularly activists—to avoid meddling in the internal politics of friendly neighbors.

He said cross-border interference could lead to abductions and other serious consequences, as each country manages dissidents differently.

“It isn’t like Kenya where it is free for all. Kenyans should only visit these countries for tourism, education, medical services, and business, while avoiding internal politics and human rights issues,” he stated.

The UN’s warning and Cherargei’s caution underline ongoing concerns over Kenya’s human rights record and the risks associated with cross-border activism.
