Makerere University Pays Tribute to Raila Odinga, Hailing His Role in Peace and Mediation

Makerere University has joined the growing list of institutions and leaders mourning the death of Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.

In a statement shared on X, the Ugandan university expressed solidarity with Kenyans and praised Odinga’s enduring legacy in leadership and peacebuilding.

“The Makerere University community joins our Kenyan brothers and sisters and the entire global community in mourning the loss of Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya and valiant politician,” the statement read.

The university lauded Odinga for his regional and continental contributions, particularly his service as a mediator under the African Union.

“We in particular appreciate and celebrate in perpetuity his gallant efforts as trusted mediator for the African Union, and always striving for the peace of his homeland Kenya,” Makerere added.

The tribute reflects Odinga’s influence beyond Kenya’s borders, where his work in promoting democracy and peace earned him continental respect.

During his tenure as AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development, Odinga played a key role in fostering collaboration among African nations and advancing cross-border projects.

His passing has drawn messages of condolence from across Africa, with leaders, universities, and organizations recognizing his decades-long commitment to democracy and reconciliation.

Makerere University’s message concluded with prayers for Odinga’s family and the people of Kenya, stating, “May God rest his soul in eternal peace.”

Odinga, a towering figure in Kenyan politics, served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 and remained one of Africa’s most prominent opposition leaders.

His influence on regional diplomacy and governance continues to resonate across East Africa.
