Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has claimed that despite Kalonzo Musyoka’s formal endorsement as Wiper party’s presidential candidate, the Wiper leader’s political future lies in a partnership with President William Ruto.

The prediction follows Kalonzo’s endorsement during the Wiper National Delegates Conference (NDC) at Uhuru Park on Friday.

Cherargei posted on X that the NDC resembled “a baby shower or funeral service or a tribal meeting,” expressing dissatisfaction with what he perceived as lackluster opposition unity.

He forecasted that in a few months, Kalonzo will be working with President Ruto rather than remaining in a divided opposition.

Earlier this year, Cherargei has been active in promoting the idea of alliances with President Ruto. He recently said that if Raila Odinga backs Ruto, the president stands to win by over 80% of the vote.

He has also called for full implementation of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, suggesting positions for opposition figures to engage with the government structure.

Opposition and political watchers have raised scepticism about such predictions. Kalonzo has publicly dismissed suggestions of joining the Ruto administration, insisting his role remains firmly in opposition.

Meanwhile, allies of Kenya Kwanza and other political groups see Cherargei’s remarks as aligning with a wider strategy of fracturing the opposition.

Sources from Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens (DCP) party, for example, have accused UDA of trying to poach Kalonzo using unconventional means.

Any shift in Kalonzo’s alignment would have implications for the balance of power ahead of the 2027 elections.

A move from opposition into collaboration could reshape the voter alignments especially in Ukambani, where Kalonzo’s influence remains strong.

It could also influence how opposition coalitions negotiate their strategy and leadership.
