Gachagua, Muturi Unite Behind One Opposition Candidate in Mbeere North Race

Former Deputy President and DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua has joined forces with Democratic Party (DP) leader Justin Muturi to back Newton Karish as the joint opposition candidate in the upcoming Mbeere North by-election.

In a message shared on X, Gachagua said the opposition had agreed to field a single candidate to strengthen their chances against the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

He held what he described as an in-depth consultation with Karish, Muturi, and Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji as part of the broader effort to unify the opposition vote in Embu County.

“Towards our victory in Mbeere North by-elections, I have held an in-depth consultation with our Opposition Candidate Newton Karish, the DP Party Leader Justin Muturi and Manyatta MP Hon. Mukunji today. We have wished him the very best as he presents his papers to the IEBC tomorrow,” Gachagua wrote.

The DCP leader said Mbeere North residents deserve a representative who listens to them, stressing that a true legislator must act as a lawmaker and oversight authority, not as an "executive stooge."

The decision by the opposition parties to rally behind one candidate is seen as a significant test of unity and coordination in the Mount Kenya political landscape, where the ruling coalition has maintained a strong grip.
