Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has played down speculation of a feud between him and former President Uhuru Kenyatta, saying those claims are politically motivated and meant to divide the Mount Kenya region ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking on KTN News on Sunday night, Gachagua said he holds no personal grudge against Uhuru and sees no reason for conflict since the former Head of State has retired from active politics.
He added that his political journey is focused on his own ambitions, not fighting past leaders.
“There’s a narrative being pushed that I’m in conflict with former President Uhuru Kenyatta. That’s far from the truth. Uhuru is a retired president and cannot run again. Rigathi Gachagua wants to be president, so how can there be conflict? We’re not opponents,” he said.
Gachagua noted that while political differences existed during past campaigns, they should not be confused with personal hostility.
He emphasized that his current mission is to consolidate unity within the Mount Kenya region and strengthen the emerging opposition alliance that he now supports alongside Kalonzo Musyoka and Martha Karua.
His comments come amid growing political realignments in Central Kenya, where some leaders have suggested there are competing factions loyal to either Uhuru or Gachagua.
The former deputy president maintained that such talk only distracts leaders from addressing the real issues affecting citizens.
He said his respect for Uhuru’s legacy remains intact, urging Mount Kenya politicians to move past old rivalries and focus on the region’s collective future.
