The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has received court approval to detain six Iranian nationals for 30 days as investigations continue into a major drug trafficking case involving narcotics valued at more than Ksh 8 billion.
Shanzu Chief Magistrate Antony Muchigi granted the request on Monday, ruling that the suspects remain in custody at the Port Police Station.
The court further directed that the recovered substances be taken to the Government Chemist for analysis and that the suspects’ mobile phones undergo forensic examination at the DCI headquarters in Nairobi.
According to court records, the six Iranians were intercepted on October 24, 2025, aboard a vessel seized by the Kenya Navy at Kilindini Port, Mombasa.
Authorities confiscated 769 packages containing crystalline material suspected to be synthetic narcotics weighing over one tonne.
Investigating officers told the court that the suspects are being investigated for trafficking narcotic drugs contrary to Section 4(a)(ii) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act of 1994.
The prosecution argued that the case involves serious transnational elements that demand a comprehensive probe to prevent similar security threats.
The DPP’s office noted that the ruling underscores Kenya’s firm stance against organized crime and the trafficking of illegal substances through its ports.
The matter will return to court on November 14, 2025, for mention as investigators finalize their report.
