Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has moved to clear the air after former President Uhuru Kenyatta accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of abandoning social welfare programmes started during Jubilee’s reign.
While addressing residents in Daadab, Garissa County, Kindiki said the Linda Mama initiative had not been scrapped as claimed, but restructured under the new Social Health Authority and renamed Linda Jamii.
“The Linda Mama programme that looked after expectant mothers has been expanded. Now it also supports children, the elderly and the youth,” Kindiki explained.
Uhuru, speaking a day earlier at a Jubilee Party meeting in Nairobi, had criticised the government for dropping key projects, singling out the suspension of Linda Mama as a major blow to families who relied on it.
Kindiki however insisted the government had improved the programme to cover more households across the country.
He urged leaders to avoid causing confusion over health reforms, saying the changes are aimed at moving Kenya closer to universal health coverage.
