City lawyer Donald Kipkorir has taken aim at some ODM politicians who entered President William Ruto’s government through the broad-based arrangement and are now championing his re-election.
Kipkorir accused the politicians of hypocrisy, arguing that some of them previously presented themselves as loyal supporters of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga but have since shifted their political allegiance to Ruto.
“The loudest people now cheering President William Ruto are the same ones who cheered on and lied to Baba Raila Odinga to FIVE PRESIDENTIAL LOSSES!” Kipkorir said.
The lawyer claimed that some of the politicians benefited politically from their association with Odinga, securing positions as governors, senators, MPs and MCAs while campaigning for the veteran opposition leader.
“They lied to Baba FIVE TIMES and on falsehood and hanging on his coattails got elected Governors, Senators, MPs and MCAs!” he added.
Kipkorir's remarks come amid heightened political activity within the broad-based government, which brought together members and allies of Ruto's Kenya Kwanza administration and politicians from Odinga's ODM party.
Several ODM figures subsequently took up government positions, while some have increasingly defended Ruto's administration and supported calls for his re-election in the 2027 presidential contest.
Kipkorir questioned the political loyalty of such leaders, contrasting their previous praise of Odinga with their current support for Ruto.
“Now from praising Baba, they have changed to the President!” he stated, describing the shift as “hollow hypocrisy.”
The lawyer also cited a quotation attributed to American statesman Benjamin Franklin, saying: “A false friend and a shadow attend only while the sun shines.”
He further invoked biblical and ancient teachings to warn against what he described as political relationships built around convenience rather than loyalty.
Odinga lost presidential elections in 1997, 2007, 2013, 2017 and 2022. His latest defeat came against Ruto, who won the 2022 presidential election.
Kipkorir's remarks add to the growing political debate surrounding the broad-based government and the positioning of former ODM allies ahead of the 2027 elections.
While some leaders from the former opposition camp have embraced Ruto's administration, others have maintained their political distance, setting the stage for potentially significant realignments ahead of the next presidential contest.
