Former Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that he had died, assuring his friends, colleagues and members of the public that he is alive and well.
Balala addressed the reports after information purporting to announce his death began circulating, prompting concern among people who know him.
In a statement, the former CS said he was aware of the reports but described the information as misleading and unfounded.
“I am well and in good spirits. I am aware of the misleading information that has been circulating, but I want to assure everyone that it is unfounded,” Balala said.
He expressed gratitude to God for his wellbeing and protection, while thanking those who reached out or expressed concern after encountering the reports.
“I thank the Almighty for His mercy and protection,” he said.
Balala also quoted an Islamic expression, “Hasbunallahu wa ni‘mal wakeel,” commonly understood as meaning that God is sufficient and the best disposer of affairs.
The former CS said he appreciated the concern and kind thoughts from his friends and former colleagues, following the circulation of the reports.
The reports had generated concern because they falsely suggested that Balala had died after an illness. However, Balala's own statement provides a direct clarification that he is alive and in good spirits.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over the speed at which unverified information can spread through social media platforms, particularly when it involves prominent public figures.
Balala is a prominent figure in Kenya's tourism sector and served as Cabinet Secretary for Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage. He held the position during a period when the government was seeking to strengthen tourism as a major contributor to Kenya's economy.
His career in public service has also included political leadership in Mombasa, where he previously served as a Member of Parliament and held various government positions.
By personally responding to the reports, Balala sought to reassure those who had become concerned about his alleged death.
The former CS expressed appreciation to friends and colleagues for their concern, and reaffirmed that he remains well and in good spirits.
