Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo has criticised the withdrawal of security assigned to Siaya Governor James Orengo, terming the move unlawful and driven by political differences.
His remarks follow reports that Orengo’s security detail was abruptly withdrawn without prior notice or official explanation.
Governor Orengo disclosed that officers attached to him, including those guarding his Nairobi residence, were removed on the evening of May 19.
The incident has triggered concern among leaders and legal practitioners, with questions emerging over the procedure used and the reasons behind the decision.
Reacting to the development, Otiende linked the incident to past experiences involving opposition figures, saying such actions are not new. He maintained that security should not be used as a tool in political disputes.
“When we were protesting, our security officers were withdrawn until the court ordered otherwise,” Otiende said. “It is wrong to withdraw the security for Governor Orengo, or anyone else, because of political differences.”
He argued that the safety of public officials is tied to their constitutional roles and the interests of the electorate.
According to the legislator, withdrawing protection exposes leaders to unnecessary risk and could have wider implications.
“In the unfortunate event that something untoward befalls any leader, the same government will spend a lot more,” he added. “Leaders are secured for the benefit of the electorate and governance.”
The move has also raised legal questions, with some lawyers pointing out that security arrangements for state officers are guided by established procedures.
The lack of communication from the National Police Service has added to the uncertainty surrounding the matter.
Orengo’s case comes at a time of heightened political tensions, with his recent criticism of the national government drawing attention. However, authorities have not publicly linked the withdrawal of his security to any specific reason.
The development has placed focus on the conduct of security agencies and their role in a politically sensitive environment.
Calls are growing for clarity on the circumstances that led to the withdrawal and whether the governor’s security will be reinstated.
