Political Storm as Tensions Rise Between Ruto Administration and Uhuru Kenyatta

A fresh political storm is brewing in Kenya following renewed tensions between the administration of President William Ruto and former Head of State Uhuru Kenyatta, with claims of intimidation and efforts to strip the retired leader of his benefits.

The developments, highlighted in the Tuesday, May 5 edition of The Standard, point to what critics describe as an unprecedented situation where a former president is allegedly facing sustained political pressure from the sitting government.

The report suggests that Kenyatta has struggled to maintain political calm since leaving office, amid claims of hostility from sections of the current administration.

At the centre of the controversy is a legislative proposal linked to Nandi Senator Samson Cherarkey, which reportedly seeks to review or withdraw certain constitutional privileges granted to former presidents.

The move has sparked debate across political and legal circles, with some leaders terming it punitive, while others argue it is within the bounds of accountability and governance reforms.

The proposal by Senator Cherargei seeks to withdraw, reduce, revoke or reallocate the retirement benefits and allowances enjoyed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

It also calls for the Auditor-General to audit all public resources allocated to him and submit a report to Parliament within 60 days, with any recovered funds redirected to public welfare programmes.

The motion argues that the former president has remained actively involved in partisan politics, contrary to the expectations of the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act.

Supporters of the former president view the initiative as part of a broader campaign to undermine his legacy and influence, especially in the evolving political landscape.

They argue that targeting a retired Head of State could set a troubling precedent for future transitions of power.

On the other hand, allies of President Ruto have defended the government’s position, maintaining that any legislative changes are aimed at ensuring fairness, transparency, and prudent use of public resources.

They insist that no individual, regardless of past office, should be shielded from scrutiny where public interest is concerned.

Political analysts note that the situation reflects deeper divisions within Kenya’s leadership, particularly following the fallout between the two leaders after the 2022 General Election.

As the debate intensifies, attention is now shifting to Parliament and the courts, where the fate of the proposed changes—and their broader political implications—is likely to be determined.
