Former nominated senator Millicent Omanga has strongly criticised remarks made by nominated senator Karen Nyamu in connection with a Grade Ten student who visited Parliament under a student engagement programme, saying leaders have a duty to protect, not undermine, the dignity of young people.

The incident has sparked public debate after Nyamu’s comments during a Senate sitting were widely interpreted as inappropriate and demeaning toward the student.

The remarks triggered immediate backlash online and within political and legal circles, with calls for accountability over the conduct of leaders in public institutions.

Omanga said Parliament should remain a space that builds confidence among young people and encourages them to take interest in leadership and public service, not one that exposes them to disrespect or discomfort.

“Young girls deserve protection, encouragement, and dignity from leaders not inappropriate remarks or sexualized commentary,” she said.

She added that the Senate carries a special responsibility because of its visibility and influence in shaping public values, stressing that any behaviour that risks undermining the dignity of minors must be addressed firmly.

“The Senate should be a place that inspires young people, especially girls, to believe in leadership and public service. We must condemn any conduct that undermines their dignity and safety,” Omanga stated.

Omanga further urged women in leadership positions to uphold higher standards of conduct, saying their behaviour often sets the tone for how society treats issues of respect, professionalism and responsibility in public life.

“As women leaders, we must lead with responsibility, respect, and wisdom,” she added.

Nyamu has been under increasing pressure following the incident, with critics demanding a clearer and more accountable apology. Reports indicate she later apologised in the Senate, although the manner in which she handled the apology also attracted criticism from some quarters
