Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced that construction of a disputed multi-agency security facility in northern Kenya has been halted following a consensus between leaders from Marsabit and Wajir counties.

The decision comes after consultations aimed at resolving concerns over the initial location of the project.

Murkomen said the agreement was reached during a meeting that brought together political and security leaders from both counties, with all parties opting for dialogue to ease tensions surrounding the development.

“I wish to thank the leaders of Marsabit and Wajir counties for putting aside their interests and finding an amicable solution to the impasse caused by the construction of a multi-agency facility in the region,” Murkomen said.

He added that the government and regional leadership had agreed to pause the project temporarily while a new site is identified by security agencies.

The relocation process, he noted, is intended to ensure the facility meets both operational and community expectations.

“During my meeting with the leaders today, we agreed to halt the construction of the facility and have the regional security teams select a new site,” he said.

Murkomen emphasized that the project remains a key part of government efforts to strengthen security along the Isiolo–Marsabit–Moyale corridor, a strategic route frequently used for transport and trade but also affected by sporadic insecurity incidents.

“The establishment of the facility, meant to enhance security on the Isiolo-Marsabit-Moyale Road corridor and the larger region, will proceed once a new site has been identified,” he said.

He also called on residents of the region to maintain calm as the process of relocation and consultations continues, warning against actions that could undermine peace-building efforts.

“We continue to call on residents of the region to remain calm and peaceful,” Murkomen stated.

The meeting was attended by senior leaders from both counties. Marsabit County was represented by Governor Mohamud Mohamed Ali, Senator Mohamed Chute, MP Naomi Waqo, Col. Dido Raso, and Prof Jaldesa Guyo. Wajir County leaders present included Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, Senator Abass Mohamed, and MPs Fatuma Jehow, Adan Keynan, Abdi Saney, Aden Daud, Hussein Barre, and Yusuf Farah.

The government says the facility will proceed once a mutually agreed site is identified, as part of broader efforts to enhance coordination among security agencies operating in the region.
