A Kenyan woman identified as Elsa Patience has sparked online conversations after sharing her personal journey of unemployment, independence, and resilience, encouraging jobless adults above 25 years to consider moving out of their parents’ homes in search of growth and responsibility.

In a reflective post, Elsa recalled how she and her sister made a bold decision during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in August 2020, despite both being unemployed at the time.

She said they chose independence over staying at home, believing it would open doors for them.

“If you are 25 years and above, jobless and still living with your parents or relatives, maybe you should consider moving out. God will bless you when he sees the need to bless you,” she wrote.

Elsa explained that their first home was a small bedsitter that doubled as a living room, kitchen, and bedroom.

She described it as cramped but full of freedom and lessons that shaped their early adulthood.

“It was our first ever house. The freedom was unmatched. You wake up at 10am and no one asks you why. You cook breakfast and it becomes lunch. We were even sharing small meals like nyama ya 100 bob as three people,” she shared, painting a vivid picture of their humble beginnings.

Despite the struggles, Elsa revealed that she attempted to rebuild her financial stability by investing her savings into a shoe business after losing her job.

However, she noted that the venture did not perform as expected, adding another layer of financial strain during that period.

She said the turning point came while living in the small apartment, when she began applying for jobs again.

Within a month, she was shortlisted for two separate opportunities—one involving a Zoom interview and another requiring travel to Mombasa, with a potential posting in Kisumu.

She opted for the virtual interview and eventually secured employment, a moment she credits to persistence and independence.

Elsa now believes that stepping out of comfort zones, even in uncertainty, can open unexpected doors. She insists that independence teaches responsibility and attracts opportunity, especially when one is intentional about growth.
