Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi has weighed in on the ongoing court battle over former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment, suggesting that a High Court decision could have far-reaching political consequences, including a potential shake-up at the top of government.
In a statement shared on social media, Ahmednasir argued that if the High Court were to overturn Gachagua’s impeachment, it would automatically restore him to office as Deputy President.
He further stated that such an outcome would, “by operation of law,” require Deputy President Prof Kithure Kindiki to vacate the position.
“If the High Court overturns the impeachment of Hon Rigathi Gachagua, then he will automatically resume his office and Prof Kithure Kindiki will by operation of law vacate office,” Ahmednasir said, adding that the political implications could extend into the 2027 General Election, where he suggested Gachagua could become President William Ruto’s running mate.
“Come 2027 and Gachagua will be H.E William Ruto’s running mate… very interesting times ahead,” he added.
The remarks come against the backdrop of ongoing legal proceedings at the Milimani Law Courts, where Gachagua is challenging his October 2024 impeachment.
On Monday, April 27, 2026, his legal team told the court that the removal process was unconstitutional and denied him a fair opportunity to defend himself.
During the same session, Gachagua’s lawyers also confirmed a shift in their legal strategy, dropping the prayer seeking reinstatement to office.
Instead, they are now pursuing compensation, benefits due to a former Deputy President, and damages arising from what they term an unlawful removal.
The hearing, which had been scheduled to run for three days, was postponed to May 7, 2026, after the presiding judge was engaged in Judicial Service Commission duties.
The impeachment case, which stemmed from proceedings in the National Assembly and Senate in October 2024, continues to draw political attention due to its potential constitutional implications and its impact on the country’s leadership structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
