Margaret Kilelu Omollo’s name entered public conversation in early 2019, when an Amref Health Africa nurse from Nairobi’s Tena Estate went missing under troubling circumstances and was later found unconscious in Mombasa.

What began as a desperate search for a loved one soon became a national human-interest story that left more questions than answers. Reports said she was last seen leaving home on February 21, 2019, before her family and colleagues lost contact with her.

According to contemporaneous reports, Kilelu was found in Mombasa after a good Samaritan raised the alarm near Bamburi, with police and hospital staff later involved in her transfer to Coast Provincial General Hospital.

Local media reported that she was admitted to the ICU, unconscious and unable to explain what had happened to her, while family members said they could not understand how she travelled from Nairobi to the Coast.

The case drew attention partly because of the silence surrounding her condition. The family said she did not speak after admission and only briefly opened her eyes, while doctors reportedly monitored her condition closely.

Some reports said hospital staff suspected poisoning, though that was never publicly confirmed, and the circumstances that led to her condition remained unclear.

Kilelu’s story also carried the weight of a family already coping with loss and strain.

A local publication reported that she was a mother of two and had previously been admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital for a depression-related illness.

The same report said she had lost her husband, Stephen Omollo, in unclear circumstances in November 2018, adding to the sense of grief and uncertainty around her final months.

For weeks, relatives held onto hope that she would recover and tell them what had happened.

The media reported that she remained in ICU for weeks before being moved to special treatment within the hospital.

On April 11, 2019, the news that followed was painful: Margaret Kilelu had died at Coast Provincial General Hospital, without ever speaking to her family about the ordeal that took her from her Nairobi home to a hospital bed in Mombasa.

Her story remains one of the most unsettling health and missing-person cases reported in Kenya in recent years.

It is remembered not only for the mystery surrounding her disappearance, but also for the image of a health worker — someone who dedicated herself to caring for others — ending her journey in silence, far from home and with her family still seeking answers.
