Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has stirred fresh political debate with remarks on the ongoing court battle involving former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, as uncertainty continues to surround the fate of his impeachment and possible return to elective politics.

Amisi raised a series of questions touching on the political direction of President William Ruto’s administration, the judiciary’s eventual decision, and the implications for voting patterns in the Mt. Kenya region.

“The big question this morning is; will Ruto let Gachagua off the impeachment impediments and allow him to run for presidency?” he posed.

He went further to question how the political dynamics in Central Kenya could shift should Gachagua be cleared to contest in a future presidential race.

“If he runs for top seat, will Central region vote for Gachagua or another candidate outside Central?” Amisi asked.

Court battle still ongoing

The remarks come as Gachagua continues to challenge his impeachment in court. The former Deputy President is seeking to overturn the decision by Parliament, arguing that the process violated constitutional requirements, including his right to a fair hearing.

His legal team maintains that the impeachment process was rushed and procedurally flawed. Parliament, however, insists that the proceedings followed the law and that all constitutional steps were observed before his removal from office in October 2024.

The High Court is currently hearing the matter, with judges expected to determine whether the impeachment stands or is nullified.

Possible political ripple effects

Amisi also questioned the broader political consequences should the court rule in Gachagua’s favour.

“Can the court overturn the impeachment? If it does, and Gachagua replaces Kindiki as running mate, will Central region continue singing one term or two term?” he said.

His reference points to the current political arrangement that saw Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki elevated to the position of Deputy President following Gachagua’s removal.

Political analysts say the case has already influenced early discussions on succession politics, particularly within the ruling coalition and in regions seen as key voting blocs.

Shifting alliances and uncertainty

Amisi’s comments reflect growing speculation over possible realignments ahead of the next election cycle. While Gachagua remains legally out of office, he continues to command political attention, particularly in parts of Central Kenya where his influence remains visible.

The case has also exposed competing political interests within the Kenya Kwanza coalition, with different camps watching closely for the court’s decision and its possible impact on future alliances.
