The River Enziu tragedy of December 4, 2021, remains one of Kenya’s most devastating road accidents, marked by a series of events that ended in the loss of dozens of lives, including members of the St. Cecilia Catholic Choir.

On that Saturday, the choir members and other passengers were travelling in a bus belonging to St Joseph Seminary. They were headed to a wedding ceremony at Nuu Parish in Kitui County.

The journey, which began like any other church trip, was expected to end in celebration. Instead, it was interrupted at the Enziu River crossing after heavy rains caused flooding that submerged the bridge.

When the bus arrived at the river, the water level had already risen to a dangerous point. The vehicle stopped as the passengers assessed whether it was safe to proceed.

Other vehicles had crossed earlier, but conditions continued to worsen as time passed. The group remained stranded for several hours, waiting for the water to subside.

As they waited, some passengers stayed near the riverbank while others remained inside the bus. The river continued to swell, and the bridge remained partially hidden under fast-moving water.

Despite the visible risk, a decision was eventually made for the bus to attempt crossing.

The bus moved forward into the flooded section of the bridge. Within moments, it encountered a depression on the submerged road surface.

The vehicle lost stability almost immediately. The strong current pushed against it, and within seconds, the bus was swept off course and engulfed by the floodwaters.

Panic set in as passengers struggled for survival. Some were trapped inside the bus, while others were carried away by the rushing water as they attempted to escape.

The situation escalated quickly, with little time for coordinated rescue from those on the shore.

Emergency response teams were deployed soon after the incident. Police officers, military divers and local responders arrived at the scene and began search and recovery operations.

The river’s strong currents and poor visibility made the work difficult and dangerous.

Over the following days, bodies were retrieved from the water, and efforts continued to recover the submerged bus.

The death toll rose as recovery operations progressed, with reports indicating that about 31 to 33 people died.

Among the victims were members of the St. Cecilia Choir, whose loss deeply affected the Catholic community in Kitui Diocese and beyond.

Survivors were few, and many families were left grappling with grief and unanswered questions.

The tragedy triggered national concern over the safety of river crossings during flooding seasons. Attention was drawn to infrastructure challenges and the risks posed by submerged roads and bridges, especially in rural areas prone to flash floods.

The River Enziu accident remains one of the most painful road tragedies in recent years, remembered for how a routine journey turned into a disaster within minutes, leaving a lasting impact on families, the church, and the wider public.
