An activist has alleged that individuals within government attempted to recruit him into a state-backed online propaganda network, offering substantial financial incentives in exchange for promoting official narratives.
In a detailed statement, Cop Shakur said he was approached last year with what he described as a lucrative offer to influence public opinion online in favour of the government.
He said:
“Last year, people within the government approached me to be a government blogger and spread their propaganda online. They offered me KSh 500,000 and promised to pay me KSh 150,000 monthly. I declined.”
Shakur further linked his refusal to what he termed personal ethical boundaries, arguing that he could not participate in activities he believes compromise public trust.
He also made serious allegations against Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, referencing remarks he claimed were made in relation to police conduct and subsequent incidents of violence.
He stated:
“Last year, Murkqmen told the police to shoot people, it is on record in the comment section. A few days later, the son of a woman I was with was shot in the head in Roysambu. I attended his funeral and promised her that I would do everything I can to help her son get justice. You see, I cannot turn against her, I cannot take blood money.”
The activist said the incident strengthened his resolve to continue his advocacy, insisting that his work is grounded in supporting victims of alleged state excesses.
Shakur also responded to recent criticism from Murkomen, who reportedly labelled him “indisciplined” during a speech to police recruits.
He said:
“Murkomen said yesterday, while addressing police recruits, that I am indisciplined. Having values and fighting for the voiceless does that make me indisciplined?”
He further alleged that government-linked online influence networks exist, claiming that some bloggers receive monthly payments to push pro-government messaging.
However, he did not provide evidence to substantiate the claims.
“Yes, the government pays bloggers and influential people to spread propaganda, Gaucho gets Ksh 150k every month, Ku spread propaganda,” he added.
