Nairobi County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, has highlighted the story of a woman rescued from the streets, using her journey to call for compassion and support for vulnerable individuals in the city.

In a statement shared publicly, Mosiria recounted how the woman, identified as Martha, had been dismissed and stigmatized by many who viewed her as a “chokoraa,” a term commonly used to describe street dwellers.

He noted that despite public perception, her situation reflected deeper social and personal struggles rather than choice.

According to Mosiria, Martha’s life took a difficult turn seven years ago when she made the painful decision to place her children in a children’s home after being unable to provide for them.

During that period, she lost one of her children, a tragedy that compounded her emotional distress. She later struggled with drug abuse and depression, circumstances that ultimately pushed her to the streets.

“Many saw her as less than human, yet her story is one of pain, sacrifice, and survival,” Mosiria stated, emphasizing the need to look beyond stereotypes associated with homelessness.

Her turning point came when Mosiria facilitated her admission to the Rapid Rehabilitation Centre for Addiction, where she began a structured recovery process.

He confirmed that Martha has since fully recovered and is expected to be discharged soon. Medical assessments also indicated that she did not contract any diseases during her time on the streets.

Mosiria further revealed that efforts are underway to reintegrate her into society, including plans to secure a stable source of income to support her independence after rehabilitation.

The county official used the case to urge Nairobi residents to adopt a more humane approach toward individuals living on the streets, noting that many are victims of circumstances beyond their control.

He also framed the story as one of hope, encouraging those facing hardship not to give up. “Her journey shows that recovery and restoration are possible, even in the most difficult situations,” he said.

Mosiria called on members of the public to support rehabilitation efforts, adding that community involvement can play a critical role in transforming lives.

He shared contact details for those willing to assist Martha as she transitions back into society.
