An open letter by blogger Maverick Aoko addressed to Siaya Governor James Orengo has sparked debate over leadership, accountability, and generational change within the county.
In her message, Aoko recognises Orengo’s long political career, describing him as a key figure in Kenya’s democratic struggles.
She notes that his contribution as a lawyer and legislator helped shape the country’s political space and opened room for free expression.
However, she sharply criticises his current leadership, accusing him of neglecting his role as governor.
According to Aoko, Orengo has focused more on national political issues while failing to address challenges facing Siaya residents.
She questions his visibility on key local matters, including disputes within the county government during his early tenure.
The blogger also raises concerns over his response to alleged incidents involving healthcare workers, suggesting that his silence on such issues contrasts with his strong stance on national politics.
She argues that county leadership requires consistent attention to local concerns.
Aoko further links her criticism to developments within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), pointing to internal shifts in influence.
She suggests that long-serving leaders risk losing touch with younger supporters and calls for space to be given to emerging political figures.
Her remarks extend to the Linda Mwananchi movement, where she warns against domination by established politicians.
She argues that such platforms should remain focused on mobilising young people rather than being controlled by veteran leaders.
The letter also references claims about Orengo’s possible political ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections, though these remain unconfirmed.
Aoko ends her message by calling for unity among Luo leaders, urging them to prioritise direction and cohesion over internal disagreements.
