Many parents face the heartache of watching their children stray from the path of their potential.

When young adults lose focus, fall into destructive habits, or make choices that endanger their future, it can feel overwhelming—especially for single parents trying to steer them back.

*Amina* (not her real name) shared her story to this publication.

For me, this struggle became painfully real when my son’s life took a turn I never anticipated.

My name is Amina, and I am a single mother raising my only son. From the moment he joined university, I noticed a change in him.

He stopped showing interest in his studies, skipping lectures and withdrawing from the things he once loved.

Soon, I discovered he had started using drugs, a revelation that shook me to my core.

The situation worsened when I found out that he had impregnated two other students. I felt devastated, hopeless, and completely unprepared to handle the mess he was in.

For weeks, I tried reasoning with him, but nothing seemed to reach him. I realized that my love and concern alone were not enough.

That’s when I decided to seek professional help.  I approached a counselor who specialized in youth and addiction issues, and that became the turning point.

Through counseling sessions, my son was guided to confront his behaviors, understand the consequences of his actions, and rediscover his focus.

I was advised on practical steps to monitor him closely, to set boundaries, and to create an environment that encouraged positive choices without being oppressive.

It was not an easy journey. Every day required patience, constant dialogue, and consistent supervision. I had to be fully involved in his academic progress, his social circles, and his routines.

Slowly, I started seeing small changes: he began attending lectures regularly, stopped using drugs, and showed genuine remorse for the harm he caused.

With continuous counseling support, he started taking responsibility for his life and actions.

Today, I can proudly say my son is a completely different person. He has regained focus in his studies and is actively working to rebuild trust with those he hurt.

The journey taught me that seeking professional help is not a sign of failure but a lifeline for both parent and child. I share my story because I know there are many parents who feel alone and defeated.

With guidance, support, and determination, it is possible to help children reclaim their lives—even when the situation seems impossible. Get The Full Story Here
