Kenya’s government has welcomed the appointment of Ambassador Dr. Monica Kathina Juma to two of the United Nations’ most senior positions, with Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo describing it as a reflection of Kenya’s leadership on the global stage.
Dr. Juma was appointed on 6 March 2026 by United Nations Secretary‑General António Guterres as Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Director‑General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV) — roles that carry the rank of Under‑Secretary‑General in the UN system.
In a statement, PS Omollo extended formal congratulations to Ambassador Juma, acknowledging her extensive career in national security, governance and international diplomacy.
He described her selection as recognition of Kenya’s contribution to international cooperation in combating crime and strengthening justice systems worldwide.
“Congratulations, Ambassador Dr. Monica Juma, on your appointment as Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and Director‑General of the United Nations Office at Vienna,” Omollo said, noting her wealth of experience in security and diplomatic affairs.
He wished her success in her new responsibility advancing global cooperation against crime and bolstering justice systems.
Juma’s appointment follows a distinguished public service career that spans decades. Before the UN roles, she served as National Security Adviser to President William Ruto and Secretary to the National Security Council.
She previously held several key Cabinet positions, including Foreign Affairs, Defence and Energy, and was Principal Secretary in vital ministries.
Her diplomatic service included ambassadorial postings to Ethiopia and Djibouti, as well as roles as Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the African Union and other regional bodies.
UNODC — the UN agency responsible for assisting member states in tackling illicit drugs, organised crime, corruption and related challenges — is central to global crime prevention and justice initiatives.
UNOV acts as one of the United Nations’ major headquarters, coordinating multiple agency functions in Vienna.
Omollo’s praise underscores how Kenya views Juma’s elevation not just as a personal achievement but as national representation on issues central to global peace and security.
