Former Chief Justice and presidential aspirant David Maraga has congratulated the people of Nepal following what he described as a historic and peaceful political transition driven largely by young citizens who demanded sweeping change.

In a statement, Maraga praised Nepal’s youth for mobilising last year and pushing for reforms that culminated in a landslide electoral victory for Balendra “Balen” Shah and the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).

Maraga said the youth-led demonstrations forced a shift in the country’s political direction and created momentum for a new leadership that promises reforms and opportunities for citizens.

According to him, the movement demonstrated how organised civic participation can influence political transformation.

“Congratulations to the people of Nepal for a peaceful transition in power engineered by its youth who took to the streets and said ‘enough is enough’,” Maraga said.

He also commended Nepal’s former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, saying her role in overseeing the transition process helped ensure the political shift was handled with integrity and fairness.

Maraga described Karki’s leadership during the transition period as steady and principled, noting that her experience in the judiciary helped guide the country through a sensitive political moment.

The former Kenyan Chief Justice further lauded Shah and the RSP for securing what he termed a historic two-thirds majority, saying the outcome reflected the desire among many Nepalis for a break from what he called entrenched political systems.

Maraga said the developments in Nepal offer lessons for young people across the Global South, including Kenya.

He linked the events to Kenya’s 2025 Gen Z uprising, which saw large numbers of young people mobilise on governance and economic issues, arguing that organised youth movements have the potential to reshape political systems.

According to Maraga, Nepal’s experience demonstrates that unity and persistence among young citizens can drive political renewal and accountability.

He urged Kenyan youth to remain organised and continue participating in civic processes aimed at reforming governance structures.

Maraga also used the statement to rally support for the Ukatiba Caravan, a civic initiative he says seeks to mobilise citizens around constitutional reforms and national renewal.

“Stay organised, stay the course, and reclaim your future,” he said, addressing Kenyan youth while referencing Nepal’s political transformation.
