Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions affecting young adults today.
They are often triggered by prolonged stress, traumatic experiences, work pressure, financial worries, or personal struggles.
While occasional worry is normal, anxiety disorders go beyond everyday stress, causing intense fear, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, sleep disturbances, and even physical symptoms such as a racing heart or shortness of breath.
Mental health experts say the condition can significantly disrupt daily life if left untreated, but with professional guidance and support, many people successfully regain control of their lives.
For 27-year-old Faith Mwangi, the struggle with anxiety slowly crept into her life before she fully understood what was happening.
“I used to think I was just overthinking things,” she said during a personal confession to this publication.
“But it reached a point where I would wake up already feeling overwhelmed, even when nothing serious had happened.”
Faith explained that her anxiety became worse during a particularly stressful period at work while also dealing with family responsibilities.
Simple tasks began to feel difficult. She struggled to concentrate, experienced constant worry, and sometimes felt sudden waves of panic.
“There were days I could not sleep well. My mind kept running through different fears about work, money, and the future. It was exhausting,” she recalled.
At first, Faith tried to ignore the problem, believing the feelings would eventually disappear. However, when the symptoms persisted and began affecting her work performance and relationships, she decided to seek professional help.
“I realised I could not handle it alone anymore. That’s when I decided to consult a mental health professional,” she said.
During the consultation, she was guided on practical steps to manage anxiety.
These included learning how to identify triggers, adopting healthier routines, practising breathing techniques, and gradually changing negative thought patterns.
“The advice I received helped me understand that anxiety is manageable when you know how to deal with it,” she said.
Faith also made lifestyle adjustments, including regular exercise, better sleep routines, and reducing excessive stress from work. Over time, she noticed gradual improvements.
“Things didn’t change overnight, but slowly I began feeling calmer and more in control of my thoughts,” she explained.
Today, Faith says she is in a much better place and hopes that sharing her experience will encourage others facing similar struggles to seek support.
