Head of Presidential Special Projects, Denis Itumbi, has mourned the passing of Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ngeno, describing him as a “brilliant and bold politician” and a stalwart supporter of Kenya’s creative sector.

Ngeno died on Saturday in a plane crash in Mosop, Nandi County, alongside several others.

In a heartfelt tribute, Itumbi lauded Ngeno’s political acumen and his remarkable ability to inspire and lead.

“The Creative Economy has lost one of its fiercest believers. I mourn Emur Dikirr MP, Johana Ngeno, an orator par excellence, a brilliant and bold politician whose voice could command a crowd and whose conviction could move a people,” Itumbi stated.

Highlighting Ngeno’s political journey, Itumbi noted his adaptability and resilience.

Ngeno first won a parliamentary seat in 2013 on a Kenya National Congress ticket, reclaimed it in 2017 under KANU, and in 2022 successfully defended his seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket alongside President William Ruto.

“He understood the terrain, read the moment, and fought with courage,” Itumbi said.

Beyond politics, Itumbi emphasized Ngeno’s commitment to the Creative Economy, describing him as a hands-on advocate for artists and creatives.

He recalled Ngeno’s efforts in establishing an annual awards platform for Rift Valley artists, which provided visibility and opportunity to creatives often overlooked.

“He did not just speak about supporting artists. He acted,” Itumbi said, noting that the MP consistently sought practical pathways to empower talent and expand opportunities in the sector.

Itumbi underscored that Ngeno saw creativity as more than entertainment, viewing it as a critical economic frontier. “Notably, he died doing what he loved, standing with an artist and supporting the Creative Economy,” he added.

Drawing on the words of Hans Christian Andersen, Itumbi reflected, “Where words fail, music speaks. He understood that when we support talent, we give voice to a people, dignity to a dream, and opportunity to a generation.”

He concluded his tribute with a biblical reference, honoring Ngeno’s dedication and legacy: “Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.” Itumbi also extended condolences to the families of all victims of the crash, praying for them peace and comfort during this difficult time.

The tragic death of MP Johana Ngeno has left a profound void in both political circles and Kenya’s creative industry, with many remembering him as a politician who seamlessly blended public service with cultural advocacy.
