Former Deputy President and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has sharply criticized Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja following a failed meeting that opposition leaders had scheduled to discuss rising security concerns.

Gachagua, accompanied by leaders from the United Opposition, visited police headquarters for what had been arranged as a consultative session with the Inspector General.

The meeting was intended to review progress on critical issues, including alleged police brutality, attacks on places of worship, and rising violence against women and children.

However, the delegation did not meet the police chief and instead engaged with junior officers, prompting outrage from the former deputy president.

In a statement shared on X, Gachagua accused Kanja of resorting to “unorthodox methods” and described the incident as a “hide-and-seek game” that undermines accountability within the National Police Service.

He further criticized what he termed the Inspector General’s continued inaction regarding the violent attack at ACK Witima Church and other reported incidents of violence nationwide.

According to Gachagua, failure to act decisively risks normalizing impunity and shielding perpetrators.

“The police service exists to serve the people of Kenya, not to intimidate them,” he stated, emphasizing that the law must apply equally to all citizens

Gachagua warned that the opposition will continue pressing for answers and accountability, declaring that the police chief “can run, but cannot hide.”

He also affirmed that the opposition leaders would return to seek direct engagement.
