Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has taken aim at fellow politicians who publicly discredit the Social Health Authority (SHA), arguing that such narratives hinder residents’ access to essential healthcare.

In a statement posted on X, Wamuchomba questioned why some MPs and senators continue to claim that SHA is ineffective during public gatherings such as funerals and church services.

She challenged them to deregister themselves and their families first if they truly believe the scheme is failing, insisting that credibility comes from action, not rhetoric.

“Leaders provide solutions, not amplify problems,” Wamuchomba said.

While acknowledging that SHA faces some operational challenges, she warned against blanket condemnation of the programme, describing calls for residents to avoid registration as retrogressive.

The MP argued that opposing registration without presenting alternatives leaves communities vulnerable.

She said the scheme, despite its flaws, continues to offer vital services including screenings for diabetes, hypertension, and other primary healthcare needs.

By discouraging enrollment, political leaders are denying ordinary Kenyans access to services they are entitled to, Wamuchomba added.

Her remarks build on a previous shift in stance, where she admitted she was “not honest” about SHA in the past but later reversed her position after seeing the benefits the programme provides.

She used her experience to caution other politicians against prioritising political messaging over practical solutions.

SHA, which replaced the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), has faced scrutiny over registration hurdles and service delivery, particularly in regions where uptake has been low.

Government officials have repeatedly emphasised that the programme is central to expanding universal healthcare access across Kenya.

Wamuchomba’s message reveals the need for responsible leadership, urging fellow lawmakers to support systems that improve public welfare rather than perpetuate misinformation.

She concluded that political rivalry should not stand in the way of citizens accessing essential healthcare services.
