A political rally in Kitengela on Sunday escalated into violence, leaving one man dead and raising fresh concerns over police use of force ahead of the August general election.
Senator Edwin Sifuna has condemned the killing, calling it “senseless” and demanding justice from the national government.
In a statement shared on social media, Sifuna said authorities had confirmed the death of 28‑year‑old Vincent Ayomo, who was shot and killed by police during the “Linda Mwananchi” rally.
“The Police shot and killed 28‑year‑old Vincent Ayomo. This is another senseless and needless killing by Ruto’s regime,” Sifuna posted, offering condolences to the family and reiterating opposition calls for accountability.
Eyewitnesses at the rally, which was organised to mobilise local supporters along the Nairobi–Namanga Highway, described chaotic scenes after police moved in to disperse the crowd.
Tear gas and, according to several participants, live ammunition were deployed. Ayomo, a garage attendant residing in Kitengela, was reportedly hit in the head and later pronounced dead at a local facility.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has been urged by Sifuna and allied leaders to launch an immediate investigation.
“This is exactly what we are fighting against,” the Senator added, highlighting what he termed a pattern of heavy‑handed policing in political spaces.
