A growing power struggle within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) played out dramatically over the weekend, as rival political tours led by Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and interim party leader Oburu Oginga drew sharply contrasting crowds in different regions.

In Kitengela, Sifuna’s “Linda Mwananchi” rally attracted a massive turnout, with residents, boda boda riders, and grassroots supporters filling the venue in large numbers.

Witnesses described the gathering as one of the most attended political meetings in the area in recent months, reflecting strong mobilization efforts by Sifuna and his allies.

However, the rally was abruptly disrupted when anti-riot police moved in and fired tear gas to disperse the crowd, triggering panic and confusion.

Supporters were seen scrambling for safety as the meeting was cut short before key speeches could be concluded.

The disruption sparked anger among attendees, with some leaders allied to Sifuna condemning the incident and terming it an infringement on the right to assemble.

"Thank You Kitengela. Inspite of all the harassment, intimidation and violence from this morning you showed up. They first destroyed our dais and sound equipment in the morning, the state goons have now tear gassed a peaceful assembly and brought it to an abrupt end. We shall not relent," Sifuna condemned the incident.

Political analysts noted that despite the premature end, the turnout underscored Sifuna’s appeal among grassroots supporters and reinforced his messaging centered on defending citizens’ interests and internal party reforms.

Meanwhile, more than 400 kilometres away in Mombasa, Oburu led the party’s “Linda Ground” tour in what is traditionally considered an ODM stronghold.

Attendance appeared modest, raising questions among party loyalists and observers about the level of support behind his leadership at the Coast.

ODM has historically relied on strong public mobilization and populist appeal to assert its dominance.

The contrast between the Kitengela and Mombasa rallies has intensified debate about the party’s internal cohesion and future direction ahead of future political contests.
