Siaya County has completed construction of a modern surgical complex at the Siaya County Referral Hospital, marking a significant step toward improving access to specialized medical services in the region.

Governor James Orengo announced that the facility is now awaiting equipping ahead of its planned operationalization later this year.

The new complex is designed to strengthen surgical capacity and enhance the county’s ability to handle critical and specialized cases locally.

The state-of-the-art unit features four fully equipped surgical theatres, a 10-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), and a pharmacy, among other essential components.

Once operational, the complex is expected to reduce congestion at the referral hospital while minimizing the need for patients to travel long distances to seek specialized treatment in major urban centres.

Healthcare stakeholders in Siaya have welcomed the project, saying it will transform service provision by bringing advanced surgical care closer to residents.

The equipping phase is expected to be completed in the coming months, paving the way for the facility to begin serving patients before the end of the year.

The new surgical complex positions Siaya County as an emerging regional hub for advanced medical care, reinforcing efforts to decentralize specialized health services and improve accessibility across the county.
