Police have recovered a high-calibre pistol in Nairobi’s Dandora area following a late-night operation triggered by intelligence from members of the public, the National Police Service (NPS) has said.
In a statement issued on X, the NPS said the firearm was found in Dandora Phase 5 during an early morning security operation as officers pursue suspected members of criminal gangs operating within the city.
According to police, officers attached to Dandora Police Station received information at around 1:00 a.m. indicating that three men behaving suspiciously and believed to be armed had been spotted in the Katoo area.
Acting on the report, officers moved swiftly to the scene in an effort to intercept the suspects.
On arrival, police spotted the three men, who immediately fled after noticing the officers. As they escaped, the suspects abandoned a jacket, which was later recovered by the police.
A search of the jacket led to the discovery of a Desert Eagle .50 AE Magnum pistol concealed inside. The firearm had no ammunition.
The recovered weapon was secured and booked as an exhibit as investigations continue.
Police say efforts are underway to track down and arrest the suspects, who are expected to be arraigned in court once apprehended.
The incident comes amid intensified security operations by the National Police Service targeting organised criminal groups and gang-related activities, particularly in urban informal settlements that have experienced rising insecurity.
The NPS praised members of the public for providing timely and credible information, noting that community cooperation remains critical in preventing crime and enhancing public safety.
Police also commended the officers involved for their prompt response, which they said prevented the suspects from retaining possession of the firearm.
Residents have been urged to continue sharing information with security agencies as police sustain operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and recovering illegal firearms across the country.
