Detectives have arrested a suspected member of a notorious robbery syndicate blamed for a wave of violent attacks against wines and spirits traders across Kajiado, Kiambu and Nairobi counties.
In a statement posted on X, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations said Paul Irungu Mwangi was apprehended following days of intelligence-led operations.
Authorities describe Mwangi as a close associate of Peter Muhia Njenga, believed to be the mastermind behind a string of robberies with violence and murder incidents that have unsettled traders in the affected regions.
Investigators from DCI headquarters tracked the suspect to the Sonic area within Kasarani Sub-County, where he had reportedly gone into hiding after several members of the gang were arrested last week. Officers moved in and arrested him without incident.
According to detectives, Mwangi and his accomplices are also linked to a kidnapping ring that has been under investigation.
Police say the gang has been targeting business operators, particularly wines and spirits traders, in a series of coordinated attacks marked by violence and intimidation.
Security agencies have intensified operations to dismantle the network and restore confidence among traders who have been living in fear due to the attacks.
The suspect is expected to be processed and arraigned in court as investigations continue. Detectives have vowed to pursue the remaining suspects believed to be at large, warning that those involved will face the full force of the law.
Authorities have urged members of the public to share any information that could assist in the ongoing crackdown, reaffirming their commitment to protecting businesses and improving safety across the affected counties.
