Kilifi County’s senatorial race is shaping up to be a hotly contested battle as lawyer George Kithi officially announced his bid for the Senate on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.
Kithi, a seasoned legal practitioner, said his decision followed extensive consultations across the county, from Malindi and Ganze to Magarini, Rabai, Kaloleni, and Kilifi North and South.
Kithi highlighted the issues raised by residents during his consultations. He noted the struggles of fishermen along the coast due to inadequate support and weak protection of marine resources.
Farmers in Ganze, Malindi, Kilifi South, and Magarini were cited as needing better water infrastructure, market access, and policy support.
He also emphasized the youth in Kaloleni and Rabai, describing them as talented and hardworking but lacking opportunities, while families raised concerns over healthcare services, stalled development projects, and land disputes.
The UDA aspirant argued that much of Kilifi’s potential remains untapped and stressed the Senate’s key role in shaping county development.
“It is at the Senate where devolution is defended, resources are fought for, and oversight ensures public funds are properly used,” Kithi said.
He added that stronger legislation and oversight could have accelerated progress in roads, healthcare, water access, fisheries, tourism, agriculture, and job creation.
Kithi will face competition for the UDA nomination from businessman Kahocho. If successful, he will challenge incumbent Senator and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate Stewart Madzayo, setting the stage for a competitive general election focused on resource allocation, accountability, and economic transformation.
Outlining his priorities, Kithi emphasized equitable resource allocation, strengthening county legislative frameworks, enforcing strict oversight of public funds, protecting land rights, and unlocking economic opportunities for youth and women.
“This is not about politics,” he said. “It is about protecting devolution, demanding accountability, and positioning Kilifi for the progress it deserves. The time for excuses has passed. The time for bold representation has come. I am ready to serve. I am ready to fight for Kilifi.”
