Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has announced her intention to vie for the Nairobi County Woman Representative seat in the 2027 General Election, setting the stage for an early political showdown with former nominated senator Millicent Omanga, who made a similar declaration hours earlier.

In a statement shared on X on Saturday, Nyamu used a mix of humour and political messaging to signal her entry into the race, warning potential competitors that the seat was firmly in her sights.

She framed her bid as a continuation of Nairobi’s political journey, arguing that after electing a male senator in 2022, the capital should rally behind one woman candidate in 2027.

"Na hii kiti yangu ya 2027 kwani nyinyi wote mnataka? Kitakuramba my sister usiseme sikukwambia. Tulisema Kanairo senator ni mjamo 2022. 2027 tunasema Kanairo mama ni mjamo siku zombo. Get ready get ready," Nyamu said.

Nyamu’s announcement came shortly after Omanga also publicly declared her interest in the same seat.

Omanga, who previously served as a nominated senator and is a former Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant, said she would be on the ballot and emphasised that her decision was driven by public encouragement and grassroots support.

The near-simultaneous declarations by the two politicians, both allied to President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), have intensified early discussions about internal competition within the ruling party in Nairobi.

While the 2027 elections are still more than a year away, the public exchanges suggest that the battle for the influential Nairobi Woman Representative position has begun earlier than usual.
