Security agencies in Isiolo County have recovered an illegal firearm after a resident voluntarily surrendered an assault rifle and three rounds of ammunition in Oldonyiro, in a move authorities say strengthens ongoing efforts to curb insecurity.
According to a statement from the National Police Service, the weapon was handed over during a coordinated security operation conducted with the support of National Government Administration Officers and local village elders. Officers secured the firearm without incident.
Police praised the collaboration between community leaders and security agencies, noting that voluntary disarmament remains a critical tool in reducing the circulation of illegal weapons in areas prone to banditry and armed crime.
Authorities urged individuals still in possession of illegal firearms to surrender them to the nearest police station or security post, assuring the public that cooperation contributes significantly to community safety and stability.
The service also appealed to residents to continue sharing information about illegal firearms and suspicious activities, emphasizing that public participation is vital in preventing crime and maintaining peace.
Oldonyiro and surrounding areas have in the past faced security challenges linked to the proliferation of illicit weapons. Officials say community-led initiatives and cooperation with law enforcement are key to sustaining calm.
Security agencies reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding residents and strengthening partnerships with local communities in efforts to enhance safety across the county.
