The Inspector General of Police has ordered an immediate inquiry into a security breach that occurred on Thursday in Wajir County during a presidential function.
In a press statement issued by the Office of the Inspector General at the National Police Service (NPS) headquarters, the police confirmed that a youthful man jumped onto the podium while President William Ruto was addressing young people during the launch of the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) programme.
The event, held in Wajir town, was attended by President Ruto in his capacity as Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces.
The incident briefly disrupted the function as security officers moved swiftly to contain the situation.
According to the statement, the Presidential Security Team and other officers on duty responded with speed and professionalism, restoring order within moments.
The NPS maintained that at no time was the safety of the President, other dignitaries, or members of the public compromised.
“The individual involved was swiftly apprehended, and the event proceeded without further interruption,” the statement read.
Inspector General Douglas Kanja has since constituted a team to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the incident.
The team has been given three days to establish whether there were any procedural gaps that may have contributed to the breach and to recommend immediate remedial measures.
The police further reassured the public of their continued commitment to safeguarding national security and protecting all citizens during public engagements.
The NYOTA programme is a government initiative aimed at empowering young people through economic and skills development opportunities.
Thursday’s launch in Wajir brought together local leaders, youth representatives, and national government officials.
Investigations into the motive of the apprehended individual are ongoing.
