Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has congratulated Ida Odinga following the approval of her nomination as Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), describing the move as a milestone for the country’s environmental diplomacy.

In a statement released after the parliamentary vetting process, Nassir said the appointment recognises decades of principled leadership and public service.

“I warmly congratulate Mama Ida Odinga on the approval of her nomination as Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme,” he said.

He added that the nomination honours a lifetime of advocacy for social justice, sustainable development, and environmental protection.

Recognition of Public Service

Nassir praised Odinga’s longstanding role in community empowerment and environmental stewardship, saying her record reflects values aligned with UNEP’s global mandate.

“This appointment is a fitting recognition of a lifetime of principled leadership, steadfast advocacy for social justice, and unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development,” he stated.

He noted that her experience in grassroots mobilisation and international engagement positions Kenya to strengthen its environmental leadership.

Boost for Kenya’s Climate Leadership

Odinga’s approval follows vetting by the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations. If endorsed by the full House, she will formally represent Kenya at UNEP headquarters in Nairobi.

As Permanent Representative, she will participate in global environmental policy discussions, climate negotiations, and sustainable development initiatives while articulating Kenya’s priorities on environmental governance.

Nassir said her voice will help amplify Kenya’s role in shaping international climate action.

“Mama Ida’s distinguished record in public service and community empowerment reflects the very ideals that UNEP stands for, and her voice will undoubtedly amplify Kenya’s leadership in advancing global environmental action,” he said.

National and Global Significance

UNEP, headquartered in Nairobi, serves as the world’s leading authority on environmental policy and climate coordination, giving Kenya strategic influence in global sustainability discussions.

Nassir concluded his message with a note of encouragement: “Hongera sana, Mama Ida. Unaweza!”

Her approval comes as Kenya continues positioning itself as a regional leader in climate action and environmental sustainability.
