The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is investigating a fatal mob justice incident that claimed the life of George Olande Otobe, also known as Omundu, on February 21, 2026, during a political rally in Mbale Town.
Otobe, a Kisumu County resident and boda boda rider, succumbed to multiple severe head injuries consistent with mob violence.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the tragedy was triggered when Otobe allegedly stabbed Hussein Hassan in the head following an altercation. Bystanders retaliated, leading to Otobe’s death.
Authorities recovered a knife at the scene, and his body was initially taken to Vihiga County Referral Hospital for postmortem examination before being transferred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) for preservation.
“The DCI strongly condemns this incident. While Kenyans have the constitutional right to assemble peacefully and unarmed under Article 37, exercising these rights violently undermines public safety and the rule of law,” the agency stated.
Hussein Hassan is receiving medical care, and authorities have wished him a full recovery.
Investigators have also raised concerns over the conduct of the Linda Mwananchi rally held on the same day in nearby Kakamega.
Reports suggest that organisers allegedly armed their supporters, contrary to constitutional provisions mandating peaceful assembly.
The DCI emphasized that organisers of public gatherings must ensure participants remain unarmed and conduct events in a non-violent manner to prevent escalation.
“The officers on the ground exercised commendable restraint, averting further loss of life in a tense situation,” the DCI added.
The agency has launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident. All individuals found responsible, whether for the mob justice or for any related offences, including arming rally attendees, will face legal action.
“No one is above the law. The DCI remains committed to upholding justice, maintaining public safety, and protecting the rights of all Kenyans,” officials said.
The public is urged to provide any information that may assist the investigation to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in future political gatherings.
