Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has protested the arrest of his security officer and the officer’s wife, alleging they were assaulted by officers linked to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

In a statement released on Tuesday, the legislator described the development as “deeply troubling,” saying he had received reports that his security aide, identified as Oliver, and his spouse were arrested under unclear circumstances.

He claimed the two were reportedly assaulted during the arrest.

Owino said that as of the time of issuing his statement, the charges against the couple had not been made known.

He called for immediate transparency from investigative authorities, including clear communication on the reasons for their detention and confirmation of their safety.

“No Kenyan should be subjected to intimidation, unlawful arrest, or violence by those entrusted to uphold the law,” the MP stated.

He added that due process must be followed in line with the Constitution, including the right to be informed promptly of the reasons for arrest and access to legal representation.

The lawmaker did not provide details on where the two were being held or the events leading up to their arrest.

Efforts to obtain official comment from the DCI were yet to bear fruit by the time of publication.

Under Kenyan law, arrests must be conducted within the framework of constitutional safeguards, which prohibit arbitrary detention and the use of excessive force.

Legal experts note that suspects are entitled to be informed of the charges they face and to be presented before a court within the stipulated time.

The incident is likely to raise fresh questions about police conduct and accountability within investigative agencies.

As the matter unfolds, attention will shift to whether authorities will clarify the circumstances surrounding the arrest and address the allegations raised by the Embakasi East MP.
