Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, alongside fellow United Opposition principals, has called for urgent police accountability following the chaotic attack at Witima ACK Church in Othaya, Nyeri County, last Sunday.
Speaking on X, Kalonzo condemned what he described as “state-sanctioned criminality” targeting opposition leaders.
According to him, since November 2024, Kenya has recorded over twenty-three violent incidents aimed at opposition figures and their supporters, disrupting funerals, prayer gatherings, church services, political convoys, party meetings, and by-elections.
“The attack at Witima Church on January 26 was the most egregious,” Kalonzo stated.
“Police officers and hired thugs deployed teargas inside a house of worship, set ablaze vehicles, and injured innocent worshippers, including children, women, and clergy.
This was not law enforcement—it was a blatant violation of every Kenyan’s constitutional right to safety, assembly, and worship.”
In response, Kalonzo and leaders including Martha Karua, Rigathi Gachagua, Eugene Wamalwa, Justin Muturi, Dan Maanzo, Seki Lenku, Gakuya Mwangi, Cleophas Malala, Gloria Orwoba, and Advocate Ndegwa Njiru, visited the Inspector General’s office at Jogoo House to present formal complaints and demand swift action.
The opposition has set a February 16 deadline for the Inspector General to ensure those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.
Kalonzo warned that failure to act would force them to escalate the matter to the international community and Kenya’s development partners, arguing that the world must be made aware of what he called “a Kenya being run by goons masquerading as law enforcement.”
He emphasized that Kenyans must not live in fear of officers sworn to protect them and reiterated the opposition’s commitment to justice.
“We stand firm. Justice must prevail. The people of Kenya will accept nothing less,” he said.
The incident has reignited national debate over the role of law enforcement in political violence, with opposition leaders demanding a thorough investigation and prosecution to restore public confidence in the police and safeguard democratic freedoms.
