The State Department for Wildlife has kicked off the year with a renewed push for stronger leadership and efficiency, following a meeting chaired by Principal Secretary Sylvia Museiya.

During the session, which brought together Heads of Department (HoDs) and senior officers, Museiya reviewed the progress made last year and outlined priorities for the months ahead.

She urged the leadership team to improve organisation and adopt smarter working strategies to deliver more effectively on the department’s mandate.

Museiya highlighted the importance of mentoring and motivating junior officers, stressing that every staff member plays a critical role in the department’s operations.

“Innovation in engaging and guiding lower cadre officers is key. Each person must be involved in ensuring the department functions optimally,” she said.

The PS also encouraged the leadership to focus on fostering responsible public service, noting that strong mentorship and accountability at all levels would enhance performance and service delivery.

The meeting reflects the State Department’s wider goal of promoting sustainable management of Kenya’s wildlife resources while ensuring that officers are well-supported and aligned with national conservation objectives.

Officials indicated that follow-up initiatives will include structured mentoring programmes, performance reviews, and new approaches to staff engagement aimed at strengthening teamwork and operational efficiency throughout the department.

Museiya’s call comes as the government intensifies efforts to improve public service delivery across ministries, with particular attention to innovation, efficiency, and effective leadership in state agencies.

This marks a strategic push by the department to enhance coordination, leadership, and service excellence in Kenya’s wildlife management sector.
