The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) on Monday confirmed that its officials visited the residence of opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, amid reports that his family had been placed under house arrest following the recent elections.

In a brief update, the commission said a team visited Kyagulanyi’s home in Magere, Kasangati, Wakiso District, as part of ongoing engagements related to the post-election situation.

The visit comes as opposition figures and rights groups raise concerns over restrictions imposed on political actors after the polls.

According to UHRC, the Head of its Kampala Regional Office held discussions with Kyagulanyi’s wife, Barbara Kyagulanyi, during the visit.

She informed the team that her husband was not available to engage with the officials at the time.

“The engagement remains ongoing,” the commission stated, without providing further details on the scope or findings of the visit.

Kyagulanyi, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has previously alleged that security forces surrounded his home and restricted movement of his family and visitors in the aftermath of the elections.

Authorities have not publicly issued a detailed explanation for the deployment, though security agencies have in past instances cited the need to maintain law and order.

UHRC’s intervention signals official acknowledgment of the concerns raised and follows sustained calls from civil society organisations and opposition supporters for independent verification of alleged rights violations.

The commission is constitutionally mandated to investigate human rights abuses and monitor government compliance with rights protections.

Its continued engagement is expected to inform any formal findings or recommendations regarding the situation at Kyagulanyi’s residence as the country navigates a tense post-election period.
